Hi everyone!
Today I'm sharing a super simple recipe -- tofu steak. Instagram blog followers might have seen the process unfold on my stories this weekend. Anyone who missed it, read on below!
The first time I ever tried tofu steak was at Hot Wok Cool Sushi on Michigan Ave in Chicago. It was crispy on the exterior and silky on the interior. Unsurprisingly, I immediately went home and made it. Four 'steaks' out of a $1.99 block of organic tofu from Trader Joe's?! Student budget win.
If I haven't already convinced you of how good and easy this stuff is, here are some pics of one steak cut in half. Look at that chewy exterior.. mmm

See below for the super simple recipe! Just be sure to get started early on this one, because it needs a nice, long time to bake!
More later.

Tofu Steak

makes 4 servings/steaks
1 block extra firm organic tofu
1 tbs oil
1 tsp soy sauce
1/2 tsp minced garlic
balsamic vinegar to taste
salt and pepper to taste
*interior detail!

DIRECTIONS
Prep: Pat the tofu as dry as possible with paper towels. Place a dry piece of paper towel on top of the block and place a heavy pot or pan over it. Let sit for 15 mins, wring out the paper towel of excess water, repeat for another 15 mins.
1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF
2. Cut the block in half, and then half again, so you have four even slices. Place in a foil-lined tray.
3. In a small mixing bowl, whisk oil, soy sauce, garlic, salt and pepper. Pour mixture over tofu pieces and rub in with fingers, making sure all sides are coated.
4. Place in the oven for 1.5 - 2 hours
Note: I did 2 hours on these^ for extra chewiness. Every half hour, flip. At the last flip, coat pieces with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar.
